What would make this a complete success?

There is a question I always ask during an introduction call with a brand. I’ve had hundreds of these conversations and, recently for the first time, the founder turned the question around and asked me the same thing.

On a typical introduction call, I ask about their brand, goals, and project. Then, after they’ve shared about their business and asked me any questions they have, I ask: “If we went forward with this project together, what would make this a complete success for you?”

I love this question because the answer helps me know if we’d be a good fit and reveals more about their expectations and goals. This founder must have thought the same as she turned the question back to me! So what did I answer?

For me, a complete success is when I can work collaboratively with the designer/founder/etc. to deliver the best-fitting product to their customers. Instead of just being given a to-do list of pattern edits, I see the client relationship and project as a success when we are able to take a step back and have a deeper conversation about the brand’s customer, lifestyle, and values. Doing so removes the egos, removes the miscommunication, and brings out the best in the brand, the design, and their customers.

What makes a project a complete success for you? Reply and tell me about it!
