The graded spec chart templates have your graded size specs taken care of, but you still need to input the base or sample size measurements for your design in order for the template formulas to work. The fit and sizing of your design all stems from your base size.
If you’re wondering where to get those base size measurements, I wrote an article earlier this year that shares four ways plus my best tips for how to get those. You can read the article here.
One of the methods that I’ve mentioned several times this week is to measure a reference sample. When selecting reference samples to use for your spec sheet, pick one or more samples that:
- Are the same type of product (i.e. choose a legging reference sample if you are designing a legging)
- Fit how you want your design to fit
- Are made in a very similar type of fabric (amount of stretch is critical here)
- Have similar design details to your design (great if you can find something similar, but not required)
This isn’t the only method, though. This blog article gives you methods for measuring a pattern, using a pattern block, and using body measurements + ease.
What methods have you used before?
If you are ready to put together a spec sheet of your own with one of these methods, you can get your spec chart templates here.
