I’m thinking of a fiery tomato red. It borders on orange, but has cool undertones. I’m sure you are thinking of a saturated reddish-orange color right now too, but are we thinking of the exact same color?
The perception of color is somewhat abstract, but the communication of it in fashion isn’t. We have standards for communicating color precisely and effectively.
For fabrics, the most widely used color standard is Pantone TCX. The TCX colors are shown on little cotton fabric swatches so that you can see how they would look on textiles.
Individual thread and trim suppliers have their own color codes for their available colors. You can specify TCX colors if you are custom dyeing your trims, but otherwise use the supplier’s stock color codes to specify each item.
For branding elements like hangtags and packaging, you’ll probably also use Pantone, but the coated or uncoated paper libraries instead of the textiles ones.
For branding online, hex codes are what you’ll want. You can use hex codes to specify colors on your website, digital images, and social media.
Using these standards, you’ll be able to request that perfect shade you have in mind.
