Versatile clothing is great…to a point.
We all love an outfit or garment that can transform from day to night, season to season, or look to look. It feels like we are getting a deal when we buy an item that can be worn multiple ways.
However, I do think there is a trade-off at some point.
Like 3-in-1 shampoo, it is convenient in a pinch when you need something that does everything. It doesn’t have to be great, it just has to do its job on occasion when you need it. For every-day use, though, 3 separate items might do their respective jobs better.
When designing clothing that transforms or serves multiple purposes, think about what jobs it will do for the customer and how well it will do those jobs. Is it the best solution for each purpose or use case? If not, is the trade-off to fit it all into one garment really worth it?
