Designing a basic tank top is simple, right?
Just because it is simple, it doesn’t mean there aren’t so many details involved to get the fit just right:
- The width needs to be just right so that it doesn’t wing out under the arms.
- The armholes need to be high enough to cover a bra, but not too high that it chaffs or gets too sweaty in the summer heat.
- The straps need to cover a bra strap, but fall on a flattering place on the shoulder.
- The neckline needs to be just the right depth for the look of the design (in each size!).
- The length needs to be cropped, but not too cropped.
Depending on your design, these needs may change, but the idea is the same. Just because the resulting garment is “basic” doesn’t mean that there isn’t lots of thought, testing, and detail that go into creating it. An effortless end product only looks that way because of the effort that was put into its development.
