Good and bad garment construction

There is no morally “good” or “bad” way to make a garment. (Unless you aren’t fairly paying the people who are making the garment. That, I would argue, is a bad way to make a garment.)

Each different garment construction method, seam, or finish can be both good or not so good depending on the context. For example:

Sewing the sleeve into the armhole before sewing the side seams of a tee shirt: good.

Sewing the sleeve into the armhole before sewing the side seams of a formal gown: not so good.

Or

French seams on a silk blouse: good.

French seams on a swimsuit: not so good.

Or

Pocket welts made in linen suiting: good.

Pocket welts made in chiffon: not so good.

It is not a question of if this seam or finish is “good” or “bad”, it is a question of “is this seam or finish the best option for this fabric, design, and garment purpose?”
