Not quite Taylor’s version

I’m not a huge fan of Taylor Swift and I’m certainly not a fan of wear-it-once festival and concert fashion, but when my sister asked if I could help her make an outfit to go to Taylor’s concert, I was excited to make this look. The way my sister approached her concert outfit is a great way for fashion brands to approach trends.

My sister wanted to make a patchwork denim look similar to what Taylor wore to a recent awards show (don’t ask me which one). Because I can’t bear to throw away fabric scraps, I happened to have all the fabric and trims we needed for the dress already in my stash.

The original outfit Taylor wore was a corset mini dress made out of different washes of denim. Instead of making it a dress, though, my sister wanted to make it a top and skirt. That way she could wear each piece separately with other pieces in her wardrobe after the concert. She also wanted the skirt longer to be more practical.

She took a trend (Taylor’s outfit) for a specific occasion (seeing this particular concert) and incorporated it in a way that will last beyond this one moment. She knew what would work with her lifestyle and wardrobe and made the trend fit that.

Not every fashion brand follows trends, but those that do can get more mileage out of each trend by altering it for their unique customer and her life beyond the one season.
