Personal biases and clothing fit

Data biases aren’t the only biases affecting clothing fit. We as human individuals have biases as well that we need to make a point to be aware of if we want to create clothing that truly fits real people.

Along with challenging information or technology biases, I think we need to challenge any assumptions we as people have about things like:

  • What an “average” or even “ideal” body shape is
  • How our culture, upbringing, or personal experience influences how we see people
  • What “flattering” means
  • What our customers want to buy versus what they buy because they have no better options

Our own personal biases can skew our understanding of our customers and our fashion businesses. If we are proactive about identifying these biases, we can fill the gaps in the information and create clothing that fits better.
