Look, Mom, I made it!
To the #1 ranked Google search result for what I do as a freelance patternmaker.
Being the top result on Google was never my goal. To be honest, I didn’t even think it was possible without big-company budgets and SEO teams. (I’m just one person and I’ve spent $0 on ads or sponsored placements.)
So how did I end up outranking the big freelancing sites like Upwork and Fiverr and all the other wonderfully talented freelance patternmakers out there? I think it is because I have a different goal.
My goal has been to help womenswear slow fashion brands confidently get their designs to production without compromising their fit, vision, or values. To do so, I’ve been consistently posting free and helpful content about this topic for years.
Twice a month I post a blog article that answers common questions, shares tips on creating better fit, and provides insight to non-technical fashion brand founders about making it in the fashion industry.
The How Fitting® podcast also comes out every other week with a new interview with a fashion designer entrepreneur about how they create clothing and grow a business that fits their customer, lifestyle, and values.
This year, I’ve also been creating daily content that gets posted to my site and sent to hundreds of you here on this email list.
I haven’t created all this to win the SEO game. I haven’t planned content topics around trending keywords. I mostly ignore SEO-optimized recommendations for titles and article length. I have not used AI to write blog posts. I’ve just tried to pay attention to what questions slow fashion designers ask and what they want to learn – and then answered those as best as I could.
Just like with slow fashion, the people need to come first. If people are the goal and the center of what you do, that is fulfilling in itself. Yes, other business successes will inevitably follow. Google does reward “original, helpful content”, but the high rankings weren’t the goal. They are just the cherry on top.
So, if you are a women’s slow fashion brand looking for a patternmaker to help you get your designs to production without compromising fit, vision, or values, hit reply to this email … or you can just Google “freelance patternmaker” to find me.
