Scrap your first design idea

Your first design is rarely the best one. It may be a good design, but is it the best solution to the problem you want to solve?

To find the best design solution, you have to go deeper. Sit with the problem. Brainstorm many different ideas. Don’t scrap any of them yet, but note each idea and then keep thinking.

Sometimes more constraints and the challenge of coming up with multiple solutions can bring out the best ideas. I’ve seen it happen many times and have experienced it in my own work and life. It forces you to think in a new way and push the boundaries of your creativity.

You want to design a whole bunch and then weed out the bad (and even the simply good) ones from the best ones. The best design ideas are simple, beautiful, and functional. They only emerge when you don’t settle for your first design idea.
