The response to production patternmaking mentoring

Thank you to everyone who replied to my email a few weeks ago about potential production patternmaking workshops/mentoring! I have never had so many responses to an email.

This was just a portion of the replies that came in right away:production patternmaking mentoring responses

Needless to say, many of you were interested.

In the replies and subsequent conversations, there were some common themes that emerged.

  • Even people who have worked professionally in the industry for years (either as a designer or pattenrmaker) experience self-doubt about their skills.
  • There aren’t a lot of available options for learning the production side of patternmaking.
  • Most patternmaking courses are aimed at home-sewers making clothes for themselves.
  • Courses are great, but the ability to ask specific questions and get answers is even more valuable
  • We all learn at a different pace, so having the information in a format that can be revisited again and again is important.
  • Planning your brand’s strategy to patternmaking and fit goes beyond just drafting patterns (this is where blocks, size standards, and consistency come in).
  • The theory behind grading – particularly plus size grading – is not well understood or widely talked about in existing patternmaking curriculum.

I will be creating a series of production patternmaking workshops that addresses these topics, but it will take me some time to outline everything and create the content. I’ll keep you updated on what to expect and when it will be ready.

I’m excited to help you get your designs to production without compromising the fit, your vision, or your values in this new format!

P.S. And don’t worry, I will still be working directly with brands to offer my patternmaking services. Client work will still be the bulk of what I do. I just want to be able to help more brands get their designs to production in an accessible way.
